Last Friday we were lucky enough to have Miss Emily from the Lyon County Conservation Office come talk to us about migration, hibernation and active animals during the winter months.  She always has lots of information and presents it in such a fun way!  WE LOVE MISS EMILY!

To wrap up our letter W learning, I brought in some WORMS!  We learned about worms and read a couple of stories that were informational and then of course, we had to read a couple of funny stories about worms.

Everyone got their own worm to touch, hold and wrap around their fingers....

or in the case of some of the kids... to LOOK at and squeal and touch quickly!! :)

Our snack for the day was making "dirt" (chocolate pudding topped with oreos) and "worms" (gummy worms).

Friday Science Days are always some of my favorite days.  The kids' squeals, apprehensions, bold moves, excitement... really- some days I can't believe they pay me for this job!  :)

Wednesday we tackled the letter X!  X makes the sound of two swords (our pointer fingers) clashing- making an X, and making the sound of KS.  We practiced listening for the sound of X at the end of words.  We even WROTE the words of pictures on a page we did!  It is so awesome to see the kids progress to this stage!  I am VERY proud of them!

We learned quite a bit about bones because X-RAY is one of the few words that starts with the letter X.  We read about bones and even had a visitor from the HS Science room visit us!!  We named him SKELLY (nickname for Skeleton someone decided) and looked him over really well.  We learned that some bones are hooked by joints so that we can bend and move and that if we didn't have bones, we would just be big blobs of skin!! :)  We learned that some bones protect squishy parts of our bodies like our brains, heart and lungs and that we have 206 bones!
We played a game of X MARKS THE SPOT on Skelly and had to find some easy bones and then some more obscure bones and joints.  ANKLES is often one that trips us up a bit and spine was another.

We sorted in math on Wednesday.  We sorted several different ways including by color, size, shape and thickness!  We are sorting WIZARDS!!!

Monday we were all about VALENTINES!  We went through our schedule and discussed how the party wasn't going to be until THE VERY END OF THE DAY!  :)  It's so hard to wait, but the schedule on our board definitely helps us remember what is happening when and the party was the last thing on our schedule before going home.  Who am I kidding, it doesn't REALLY help, but it is a visual at least for them to refer to!

We started the morning off using our iPads and the QR Reader to have Valentine stories read to us.  There were several pages of QR codes to scan so it kept us busy for a good chunk of our literacy time.  We also did a listening exercise where there were 8 "valentine buddies" to choose from but the kids had to listen very closely to the clues describing the buddies to know which one to give the valentine to.  When we first started doing it, some of the kids would raise their hands thinking they knew which buddy it was going to be.  But others would point out that there were TWO buddies with long brown hair... (etc.) and we couldn't be for sure which one it was going to be without listening to the rest of the clues.  The kids got really good at it, so we tried it again with animals and again with community helpers.

We worked on syllables in words.  We said the word.  Clapped out the word.  Clapped it out again and counted the parts (or syllables).  After we figured out how many syllables were in the word, we stamped out that many squares with Valentine stampers.

Ten frames was the next up on the to do list.  We did a couple of the first ones together and then we did the rest of the page independently!! :)  We also sorted and graphed candy hearts.  We found out that purple candy hearts were the fewest graphed hearts.  There were some kids that didn't have ANY purple hearts and for most, purple was the least row on their graph.  We ate a few of the hearts but we brought most of them home in a baggie to share.  You're welcome!  :)

We opened our Valentines before we went to Art so that we didn't have to take time to do that during our party!

After the last recess it was FINALLY TIME FOR OUR PARTY!  The party moms had a great party all planned out for us starting with a delicious snack of heart shaped cookies, heart shaped jello and juice bags!
Following our snack, we split into 3 groups and played 3 different games and rotated through them during the party!  There was PIN THE NOSE ON THE CLOWN
BEAN BAG HEART TOSS
and VALENTINE BINGO!

Thank you to the moms who came and helped make our party a complete success!!

Wednesday we talked about the letter W!  We read the story Mrs. Wishy Washy.  She has animals that all jump in the mud and she has to give them a wash.  We were able to read it on the Smartboard all together.  We practiced reading with expression.  Even when we came to words that were bold print, we practiced saying it a bit louder.  We got to be pretty good at it!  :)  We made a small flip book with the characters in the story and we also took a survey and graphed if we each like to take a bath or not.
Mrs. Doorneweerd came in to help us do CODING again!  She found a new app for us to try and it worked like a charm!  It is truly amazing to watch the kids figure out how to make the characters move, jump, throw, etc in different scenarios.  They aren't just playing a game.  They actually have to program the character on how to move to get to a certain spot or treat or tool.  2 steps forward- jump up- 3 steps forward, etc.  They are pretty awesome at coding!!

We practiced rolling playdough into long logs and tried to make it match premade cards that had squiggle lines on them.
Some of the logs had to be pretty long to make the line/shape.  We also used extruders and letter stampers with the playdough.
It was a busy afternoon with lots of good small motor practice.

Hendrix is our STUDENT OF THE WEEK!  He told us he has TWO favorite colors: Green and purple.  He likes snakes... (we had a lengthy discussion about snakes and if you can really LIKE snakes... we decided that he seems to really like them... ewww :) )  He has one big brother Braxton and he wants to be a hunter when he grows up!
Thank you for sharing your pictures and telling us a little about yourself, Hendrix!

Monday we were all about VOLCANOES!  We read a story that had several real photos in it of active volcanoes and we watched a video of an actual volcano with the lava running down the side of the mountain into the ocean in Hawaii.  In the video we saw a couple of people that had gone beyond a rope that was to keep them safe.  Some of us were VERY worried that they had not followed the rules and it was only for their own safety! :)
We learned the different parts of the volcano as we made a large volcano on paper.  The magma chamber (magma is the lava before it is out of the volcano), the vent, the lava and the ash cloud. And then it was time for some experimenting!
We made our own volcanoes with baking soda and vinegar and of course, a drop of red food coloring.  SO FUN!!

Wednesday we worked on our Valentine bags, read a story called THE LOVE MONSTER and did an emergent reader with colors and the LOVE MONSTER!  :)  We practiced writing numbers using a tally sheet to match monsters with numbers and recorded our answers.

DON'T FORGET TO SEND VALENTINES ON MONDAY!  IT WILL BE PARTY DAY!!! :)
20 students are in our classroom!  Just have kiddos sign their names in the "from" spot and then they can just drop them in the bags on their own when they get to school!

U is the letter of the week this week.  It is a little bit of an obscure letter- not many of us have it in our names.  There aren't a lot of words that start with it and it makes a sound completely different than what its name says.  So, what I'm getting at is.... it's a toughie.

We read a sweet story called, IN THE RAIN WITH BABY DUCK.  Baby Duck does NOT like the rain, but with the help of some rainboots and an Umbrella- she learns to like the rain just fine!!  After we read the book, we made an umbrella following directions like we did 2 weeks ago with the Kangaroo.  Those went home on Monday afternoon with the kids.

We were able to get to the library on Monday afternoon for new books and also to the computer lab!
FLYN is our Student of the Week this week!  Flyn has two brothers and two sisters.  He LOVES his baby sister and does NOT like snakes!  He would like to be a nurse when he grows up because his mom was a nurse.  He likes the colors blue and red and two words that describe him are TOUGH and SMART!  Flyn brought in several pictures for us to look at and our hands down favorite one was when he was a baby and it is just his face in the picture!

Thank you, Flyn for bringing in your pictures and telling us a little about yourself!

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1!  HI!!!  Remember me?  Yes, it's your child's friendly TK Teacher trying to catch you up after  A WEEK'S WORTH OF SNOW DAYS!  THAT was bad timing, huh?  A week that we didn't have Friday TK?  Darn it!  Well, we buckled down again and got right to work on STILL the letter U.

Wednesday's big news is that it is the 101st Day of School!  So, since we weren't here yesterday to celebrate the 100the day.... we are never ones to miss a party opportunity- so we celebrated TODAY!  The 101st Day of TK!  Naturally, this all lends itself to 101 Dalmatians, so we took off from there!

If you have your SeeSaw account up and running, I sent you the picture of your little dalmatian earlier today!  :)

We made dalmatian headbands with 101 spots on the ears (50 on one ear, 51 on the other).  We made a necklace with 100 Fruit Loop cereal pieces strung on it.
We used a ten frame (an egg carton with 2 holders cut off) to help us make a 101 snack pack.  There were 10 different snacks around the room.  The kids went to each snack- filled up their 10 frame with the snack and then went back to their seat where there was a mat waiting for them to dump their treasures out on.  After a visit to each snack station, the kids got to pick ONE of any of the snacks to make 101!
A mat getting filled up with 101 snack pieces!

We read a couple of stories that focused on the number 100 and we ate Dalmatian cupcakes...
at the end of the day... right before we went home... you're welcome! :)

Your PT Conference Appointment sheet is in your child's folder this afternoon!  Please contact me if you do not find it and I will email you the time!  I am looking forward to telling you all of the amazing things your child is doing in TK!!!
